The History of Santa

Santa Claus, or Father Xmas, known in the past as Saint Nicholas or Kris Kringle has a long long history of Christmas. Today he is the man in the red and white costume who brings toys to children on Christmas Eve, but the history goes all the way back to the 3rd century when Saint Nicholas was renowned to be the patron saint of  boys and girls.

The Legend of St. Nicholas

The Real Santa Claus can be traced back hundreds of years to a monk who was called St. Nicholas. It is believed he was born sometime around 280 A.D. in a place called Patara close to Myra, which is now in modern-Turkey.

Nicholas was respected for his devotion and kindness, he became the symbolic to many myths. It was believed he gifted all his acquired inheritance and monies, and he travelled the countryside helping all of the  poor and sick.

Because of his kindness he was made a Saint. St Nicholas is not only the saint of children, but also of Sailors. One story tells of him helping some sailors that were caught in a bad storm of the Coast of Turkey. The storm was raging around them and all the men were terrified and their ship would sink beneath the giant waves. They prayed to St Nicholas to help them. Suddenly, he was standing in front on the deck before them. He ordered the sea to be calm, the storm died away, and they sailed the boat safely into the port.

Over many years, Nicholas’s reputation spread and he became known as the protector of children.
